Coronavirus: WHO warns of serious long-term side effects

These can occur even in people who have not been hospitalized

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus , has warned that many patients with Covid-19 , whether or not they have been hospitalized, may experience serious long-term effects.

And although it is not known how many people who have recovered from Covid-19 continue to experience serious effects of the disease, Tedros has reminded us that many people suffer from "persistent" complications from Covid-19 in the long term.

"It is truly worrying how wide a spectrum of symptoms fluctuate over time, often overlapping and potentially affecting any system in the body," said the WHO Director-General, explaining that these symptoms range from fatigue , coughing , or shortness of breath to inflammation and injury to major organs, including the lungs and heart, and even neurological and psychological effects.

Therefore, and after listening to the testimony of several people who overcame Covid-19 but suffer significant after-effects from the virus, Tedros has asked governments around the world to be aware that Covid-19 can have serious long-term effects and to guarantee access to health for all patients, including primary, specialized and rehabilitation services.

"This virus poses a significant risk, and these people need long-term care to fully recover, which shows that herd immunity is not effective and would result in a very large number of people facing a long recovery," he added.
