For those living with HIV, following treatment has two advantages: on the one hand, they remain healthy and, on the other, if their viral load is suppressed to undetectable levels, they cannot transmit the virus to their sexual partners.
The number of people living with HIV who are on treatment continues to grow. By mid-2019, an estimated 24.5 million people were receiving antiretroviral therapy, more than double the number recorded in 2012. However, this increased access to medication is still not enough to reach the goal of having 30 million people living with HIV on treatment by the end of 2020. With 37.9 million people living with HIV at the end of 2018, the unmet need for treatment remains alarmingly large.
