With the aim of breaking the stigma surrounding HIV in South Africa, the South African version of Sesame Street introduced "Kami," a five-year-old girl who lives with the virus, has a family history regarding the condition, and serves to educate children about this disease.
Although “Kami” arrived at Sesame Street years ago very nervous about the possibility that others might not want to be near her, the reception was very warm, because the character not only educates about the virus, but also talks about acceptance; in fact, her name comes from the Setwana word “kamogelo”, which means “acceptance”.
The character is a healthy HIV carrier, a condition she knows a lot about, since her mother died as a result of the disease; that is why her mission is to inform about it and promote acceptance of children towards carriers.
Following her debut in 2002, UNICEF named her a "champion of children" in a video where she appears alongside former US President Bill Clinton to deliver a message about HIV.
The puppet has taught children that hugging people with HIV is harmless, how to cope with the disease, and explains death to the youngest ones, while being playful and affectionate with its fellow program participants.
